Todays one way mileage for that section was also about 5 miles; a great ride, and you can ride much farther (we often go as far as Whalley Lake, just not today) as the trail goes all the way to Hopewell Junction where you can pick up the Dutchess Rail Trail. THERE ARE NUMEROUS CROSSINGS AND PORTAPOTTY'S ALONG THE WAY, ALONG WITH A BIKE SHOP AT ABOUT MILE MARKER 7.ABOUT A 1/2 MILE BEFORE OVEROCKER RD. There's plenty of parking at this spot. All in all I would definitely recommend this trail, and you may also want to look up the Harlem Valley Rail Trail near Wassaic and the Wallkill Rail Trail that passes through New Paltz. Few amenities so pack a lunch and plenty of water. It has a short road hop to an on-ramp to the Trailway. Recommended option. It's a lovely, well maintained trail that connects to the walkway over the hudson and the hudson valley rail trail. That section now runs along afew already-built, paved and bike-able trailways: the North County Trailway, South County Trailway, Old Put are a few (and theyre great). This is one of my favorite hikes in the Clarence Fahnestock State Park. If you are in the area I would highly recomend you take the time and visit this rail trail. The plan calls for a continuous off-road, shared-use pathway from New York City to Buffalo. There is STILL no bridge over Maloney Rd. 07/29 would begin the actual placement of the bridge sections - on Wed. 07/31 should be the installation of the final bridge section over the hwy. The adjacet sand/ soil path is level, clean and well maintained. It was once a two-track freight line, but one track was removed in 1962; which is where the bike path is situated. The only thing that would be great to see would be mile markers. adventures and follow local regulations. There is some non-trail surface (sidewalk, shared road) but very little and not much of a distraction from the beauty of the rest of the trail. Fishkill Ridge is a strenuous but rewarding hike, and one of the less known areas in the Hudson Valley. The trail is wide with plenty of room for three bikes to pass each other and there are not too many road crossings and none of them are busy roads. A previously existing segment of approximately five miles heads east from Brewster towards Danbury, Connecticut via the East Branch Reservoir. Almost all of the forms have been removed,except for 2 small protrusions, presumabely to anchor the new bridge once finaly in place.There was no activity at Diddell Rd.At the Sprout Creek bridge,near the SR376 crossing in East Fishkill, I was now able to see the exact nature of the work being done. The trail is also narrow in spots making it uncomfortably close for bikes traveling in opposing directions. I parked at Pumphouse Rd which is right before the Tonetta Lake parking area. At Hopewell Junction, it provides a seamless link to the William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail,and onward to the Walkway over the Hudson State Parkand the Hudson Valley Rail Trail in Ulster County. Of course these attributes means it can get a little crowded by mid-afternoon on a weekend, but that's easily avoidable by starting early. There are no services between Brewster and HJ, and the trail feels pretty remote, but there's lots of nice scenery. In Hopewell Junction, the trail ends at the Hopewell Depot, standing since 1873, which now houses a museum and historical photo gallery. So you could ride more than 100 miles paved off-road. A special thanks to NY Senator Charles Schumer (D) for negotiating the deal with CSX for acquisition of the CSX ROW property in the city of Poughkeepsie by the Walkway organization - the 'friends" of the Walkway.I had read that originaly CSX had wanted $6M for the property but the Dyson foundation had apraised the property at only $2M.The final deal negotiated by Mr. Shumer would be for a tad more than $1M.Once the Walkway group has legal ownership of the property,they are to turn the property over
to Dutchess county.The undeveloped ROW between the Walkway OTH state park and the current northern terminus of the Dutchess RT will be a part of the Dutchess RT - phase 5. After many years of driving over an hour from NJ to Turner st in Hopewell Junction to ride the Dutchess trail to Walkway Over the Hudson - it was fun to go south / east in the other direction. It's well paved, shaded most of the way, and there are only slight changes in elevation, so though it's a long ride it's doable by most. The trail, which is owned and was built by Metro North Rail, occupies the former secondary track of the Beacon Line. It is obvious the volunteers who take care of this trail do a great job (thanks, Ron! Its a short hike but you certainly could go further up.
